I finally got on the bandwagon and made a muxtape. This first one is titled "Random Association," but mostly it's a collection of two- or three-song groupings that harmonize in certain ways -- using similar melodies or some such. It's yet another draft of a mix I've burned to CD for people a couple times in a couple of versions.
There are a couple surprises in there. For instance, one should not assume that I'm a fan of Spacehog or Yes just because they're in the mix. Not that I dislike them, but they're there just for their resonances with each other and Twilight Singers' "Martin Eden" (as well as "Esta Noche," which has stood here in other versions of the mix.) Likewise, Vanessa Carlton appears because of the similarities of the piano lines in "A Thousand Miles" and Twilight Singers' "Teenage Wristband." Of the teeny-boppers of her generation, Carlton's one of the better, but I don't think I've heard more than 30 seconds of any of her other songs.
Interesting that Twilight Singers appears twice here, both with ideas connecting to other songs, no? It's one of the things I like about the band. Greg Dulli's musical tastes are all over the board, from hip hop to the Beatles to deep dark grunge, and those influences show up in his music, often right up on the surface. As someone whose taste is also eclectic, I love listening for the unexpected connections and pairings he makes. Fun stuff.
Anyway, give a listen.
