Basil Give-away
This spring, Cinnamon and I chose a plethora of plants for our garden and deck planters. We went a little overboard on the basil -- three varieties vied for attention on the deck, and three bushes of the same variety fought the tomatoes for space in the garden downstairs.
Of course, being busy young urbanites, we didn't cook nearly enough to make use of all that basil, and when the plants switched to reproduction mode it was all we could do to keep up with the trimming. (Once basil starts to blossom, the leaves turn bitter and you can't cook with them anymore. You can keep the leaves from getting bitter by trimming off the flower buds before they can open, but once the plant gets into the swing of it, it's hard catch them all. The blooms dry out and turn into seed pods.)
So we've got a ton of basil seeds, far more than we'll ever use. And my thought is, hey, why not share them with people? So here's the deal. Email me (a.huff@ this URL) with your name and address, and I'll mail you an envelope with a few seeds in it, at least enough to ensure one or two sprouts come Spring. You could get seeds for plain old Italian sweet basil, licorice basil (which produces purple-and-green leaves and tastes a little anise-y) or spicy globe basil -- most likely you'll get some combination of those.
No, I don't expect anything in return. Just let me know you're interested.
Posted by Andrew Huff at October 29, 2003 02:36 PMYou know I'd be interested in seeds. I didn't know the bit about the transition to bitterness after blooming... I have a specimen of Thai basil that I had clipped before. But I've let it go lately because it was having such a hard time growing (what with having to clip leaves that white flies had planted eggs on).
