Toledo

I'm heading out of town today for a wedding -- to Toledo, Ohio, specifically. I figure after yesterday's post, I should actually try some of these descriptions of people I've known, so here's two of my friends from my stint at Beekman's Bagels in Columbus; both were originally from Toledo.

Sarah was almost a neo-hippy, but not quite. If I remember correctly, she worked with a domestic violence prevention group on campus, and was active in the women's studies department (may have been her major, actually). She was short, with long brown hair and glasses with really small lenses, before that style was cool.

After the first Beekman's Christmas party, she and I walked back to High Street together (down 15th, I think) and drunkenly talked about...I don't remember what. I do remember vaguely hoping to go home with her, but instead we went our separate ways, and I crashed in bed. I unfortunately had to work the next morning, which I did with a huge hangover, along with everyone else on the shift.

Pete exuded cool. He had a lanky, relaxed figure and the deepest voice I've ever heard. He started off as a delivery driver, but he ended up inside and eventually became a shift manager -- but we still worked the Friday close shift together a good amount of the time. Pete was an artist, and after he graduated he got a day job teaching art to little kids. He'd tell us stories about the kids, each one of which would start with an impersonation of the kid asking a question: "Mistah Waagnuh?..." He and his girlfriend got married in Vegas by Elvis, and their wedding was filmed as part of a TV documentary on the city. We went to see Combustible Edison up at Stache's and brought martini glasses for the band to sign -- but he decided not to ask them once we got there. Two thirds of the band signed mine, but I brought a dry erase marker instead of a Sharpie, so I can't really even touch the glass -- it sits up on a shelf, coated in dust.

No Jima, the party's not at our place; you guys didn't clean up last time, and the condo association was all over us about the ram's blood in the hallway.

I recently came across a posting you made in August from the cafe I inhabit. Being an aura, I don't normally read blogs, but I found yours while looking for a local spiritual meditation center (can you recommend one, btw?). I want to apologize, from the bottom of my ephemerality, for your negative musical experience here. I can only but blame it on the violence committed upon me by one of the cafe's employees, coincidentally named "Andy".

I would also like to extend the invitation to you to come renovate my essence sometime, i.e., to DJ at the cafe.

Dear those reading this,

As the aformentioned "Andy" I would like to dismiss the claims as well as state my side of the argument. First, I would NEVER put Madonna in (too many reasons to post all of them), nor could I create "negative experience" with the following music. My music includes the following:

GOOD jazz (i.e., not SMOOTH) - M. Davis, Coltrane, etc.
Radiohead (now "banned" from the cafe)
French ambient/triphop
Johnny Cash (R.I.P) (also "banned")
White Stripes (now also "banned")

Wisconsin (my home state - also "banned")
cheese (banned)

uh...where was I...

Doc Watson (banned)
Jerry Garcia (broken - thus, "banned")
Good music in general ("banned")

Thank you for hearing me out.

The long suffering, soon banned, but good-spirited and STILL named,

andy.

I realized later that the Madonna album I heard over and over again wasn't "Ray of Light" but her most recent one, with the pseudo-Ché cover.

But if Radiohead and Johnny Cash have been banned from the stereo, I don't know if you'd want me DJing. (If that's a serious offer, though, email me at a.huff@[this URL] and we'll talk.)

I would at least recommend that all y'all at Pause hit him up for a mix CD, he's got it down to an art, I tell you. He's quite good. His version of playing DJ at home is filling the changer with cds that you wouldn't think would go well together, but always do.

I'll have to say HI next time I'm in.
