...fivetwentyeight...
We are now the proud owners of a coffee mug emblazoned with the faces of Jerry Immel and Althea Sumpter, a souvenir of their marriage yesterday. We just got back.
They had a Quaker wedding (Althea is a Quaker), which was one of the most agreeable wedding styles I've seen. The attendees came into the meeting house and sat in silent reflection; Jerry and Althea then came in together and sat in the center. After some additional silent reflection, the bride and groom rose and said their vows to each other, then signed a large marriage certificate, which was then read out loud by a friend. After that, attendees were invited to give messages to the newlyweds. About two dozen people -- friends, relatives, in some cases strangers -- stood and gave them their blessings, sometimes funny, sometimes tearful, always sincere and heartfelt. The ceremony ended with a handshake, and everybody signed the marriage certificate (there were 150 signatures in all) and went out to the lobby for a potluck dinner. The food was amazing and bountiful.
When Cinnamon and I get married, I hope to model our wedding off this one. Everybody had a good time, nobody felt uncomfortable, and the focus was on the people, not the pomp and circumstance. (And the food was excellent; considering the number of good cooks we know, the food at ours would be, too.) Of course, no date has been set for our wedding. And none will for a while yet, so don't get too excited.
Funniest moment: Jerry and Althea met online, although they've traveled in similar circles as broadcast professionals in Atlanta. One woman, a friend of Althea's, stood up during the wedding and said something to the effect of, "Well, now I'm gonna get online..."
Aw...come on...I want my kids know think of you two as the crazy couple that never marries. ;)
Well the time comes, it'll be grand.
Posted by: Roni at October 28, 2002 04:59 PMThat took a lot of guts Andrew. You better hope that a certain someone doesn't catch wind of that statement or you'll never hear the end of it. You know the house is almost done and she'll be looking for another project to conquer. Good Luck!
